I remember

  • Girls were not allowed to wear pants to school
  • Cashiers in grocery stores entered the price of each item in your cart manually into the cash register
  • Babies were laid across the mothers laps while the mother was driving .
Okay, I didn't say everything I remembered was okay!
  • When schools actually had lockers for books to be kept in
  • If you misbehaved in school, you got a "whack" with a paddle the size of Alaska
  • You didn't misbehave in school a second time
  • Spring Break was called Easter Break
  • The only radio stations were AM
  • Which you listened to on your Transistor Radio
  • Your class all stood and repeated The Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord's Prayer each morning.
  • Playing outside until Mom would yell your names throughout the neighborhood.
  • Playing "Kick the Kan" in the street with all the neighborhood kids.
  • If a girl was going out on a date, he had to meet her father first.
  • Black and White TV
  • An ashtray in a new car was not considered an option.

  • The A/C in our house was a "swamp cooler". Which consists of a box, fan, vents and the garden hose dripping cold water into the back of it. (yes it was purchased that way)
  • Cloth Diapers (my sisters)
  • When TV Dinners were first available!
  • Friday and Saturday nights were "date night"
Okay, what do you remember?

And to think that with ALL that stuff going on when we were growing up...WE SURVIVED!!!

Our school paddle as the Board of Education (and was often applied to the Seat of Knowledge)...lol.

--And girls' skirts had to be AT or BELOW the knee.
--We all wore SHOES to school...with soles and heels...sneakers were for GYM CLASS ONLY, and flip flops weren't even invented.
--Every classroom had an American Flag in it.
--We played stick-ball in the street (when we were older than those in 3rd grade).
-- we had a HUGE B/W TV with a small screen and only three knobs (off/on, volume ctl and channel select)
--Single speed bicycles with big tires and HEADLIGHTS!
-- playgrounds with CHAIN swings and Leather strap seats.
-The 10 ft. tall polished steel SLIDING BOARD.
-- Nickel SODAS (8 oz bottles)
--Bringing home a whole BAG of candy for that same nickel!
--Drawing hopscotch boards on the sidewalks
--Cars without seatbelts (and no problems with that)
--MANUAL juice squeezers and meat grinders for the home.

So much to remember...that's for sure...and we STILL SURVIVED.

Amazing, isn't it?

Great post.
Stay safe down there.

How about:
-comedy that didn't need cursing to be funny
-commercials catchy enough to sing along with
-not having to lock your doors
-pre-teen girls without makeup
-roller skating parties
-knowing your neighbors
-whole families together at Christmas
-mom knowing just where you left what you were looking for, every time
-summers that lasted forever
-Choc-ola!!!!
